Effective communication intervention requires an understanding of current evidence, best practices, and the unique needs of each individual. The NJC has developed resources across 14 topic areas to guide professionals, families, and advocates in providing high-quality, person-centered communication supports.
Communication is a fundamental human right. For individuals with severe disabilities, access to knowledgeable and responsive intervention can be transformative. The resources in this section are grounded in the NJC’s core belief that every individual has the capacity to communicate and deserves the supports necessary to do so.
Topics range from foundational concepts, such as how communication is defined for this population, to practical guidance on specific approaches including AAC, behavioral strategies, early intervention, literacy, and services for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Throughout, the NJC emphasizes evidence-based practice, collaborative teaming, cultural responsiveness, and the importance of supporting individuals across all settings and life transitions.
